City Bikes and Green Cycle Routes in Copenhagen: A Perfect Concept for Tourists in Copenhagen.

The first time City Bikes appeared as a phenomenon in Copenhagen was in 1995. City Bikes is a service raised by the “Fonden Bycyklen i København” , a sponsor driven foundation, who in 2010 offers almost 2500 City Bikes, located at 100 different parking lots in the capital to be let by tourists and citizens in Copenhagen.

This service has become world famous, and many cities all over the world have been inspired by the idea, due to the fact that city biking is a perfect way to discover a city as a tourist.

In Copenhagen the users of City Bikes get the opportunity to profiting from the perfect infrastructure in the city. The municipality of Copenhagen have created “The Green Cycle Routes of Copenhagen”, a cohesive network of cycling routes and footpaths leading through large distances of open, recreational areas such as parks and waterfront areas. These routes avoid roads with heavy traffic, crossing them safely and comfortably by means of bridges or special traffic signs and signals.

All in all, 22 cycling routes have been planned, counting 110 kilometers. The first 40 kilometers are already established, the remaining kilometers are going to be made during the next years. The routes will be marked with signposts indicating the direction and distance to certain key destinations.
The Green Cycle Routes are meant to serve as recreation and as a mean to get exercise by cycling, running, walking or to have fun by skateboarding or other games on wheels. In addition, the routes offer you the opportunity of cycling to your work or place of education as well as the opportunity of cycling through all or part of your daily journey in peaceful, green, car-free and bus-free surroundings. Free cycling map showing all Green Cycle Routes is provided from the municipality of Copenhagen.
