Transport and how to get around in Copenhagen
The public transportation in Copenhagen is quite extensive and most of the time very reliable. The city has several methods of transportation, which can
take you anywhere in the city. You can use any method of transportation you wish using the same ticket, which means you do not have to buy another type of
ticket if you change from a train to a bus, as long you have paid the correct fare. Copenhagen is divided into zones, which is used to calculate the cost of
your ticket.
Bus
The bus network in Copenhagen is actually quite extensive and efficient, but can also be slightly confusing for foreigners, who do not know the stations and
so on. One way to make sure you get on the right bus, is to use the online travel planner Rejseplanen. Copenhagen has recently introduced a new bus line 11A which is specifically meant for tourists, as the
bus stops at many of Copenhagen’s biggest tourist attractions.
S-Train.
The S-trains are the classic Copenhagen way of getting around for people who do not ride a bike. Even for foreigners visiting Copenhagen for the first time,
the S-train system is quite easy to understand and the S-trains do not only operate in Copenhagen, but can also take you to cities outside of Copenhagen.
Like for the busses Rejseplanen is quite an effective
way to plan your trip.
Metro
The metro is the newest part of the infrastructure in Copenhagen and the first lines opened in 2002. The metro is often the fastest way to get from
Copenhagen Airport to the City Centre where the mains stations within the City Centre are Christianshavn, Kongens Nytorv and Nørreport. Currently there are
only two lines, but the network is expanding and more stations will be added during the coming years.
Boat
With Copenhagen’s location by Øresund, water is certainly a part of the capital’s cityscape. One of the major attractions in Copenhagen, that almost every
tourists tries at least once, is the canal tour boats. Other than recreation, the Copenhagen water can also be means of transportation. The harbour bus (line
991, 992 & 993) can take you from various locations in Copenhagen more quickly than the bus and is for example the most efficient way to get to the Opera
House from Kongens Nytorv. You can use the same tickets on the harbour bus as the ones you use.
Bike
The bike is for many Copenhageners the preferred method of transportation. Copenhagen is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world and most streets
have designated bike paths, so that biking around the Danish capital is as safe as possible. Biking within the City Centre is also quite often much faster
than driving or taking the bus.
